History of Glass in IRAN
     

Iran is one of the few countries in the world with a thriving glass blowing industry, which has four thousand years of tradition behind it.
The people in the Iranian plateau had always shown their skill in cutting and engraving glass. Archeologists have not identified any site in Iran as an ancient central for glass making. Therefore, there is not sufficient information about all the evolution of this industry in Iran.

 

 

The earliest glass artifacts, in Iran, were found in Chaqazanbil, Ilamid temple in the town of Susa. The periods craftsman used faience to make glass rods, used as light catches or panes or oven statues representing their totems.
At the present time, glassware is produced chiefly in Tehran, Meymand in Fars province and Tezenje, a village in central Iran.
Blown-glass products are made of various silica, calcareous and soda glasses which should not come in contact with hot liquids
Until fifty years ago every large town had a glass melting kiln and a number of expert glass blowers who could blow very large bottles as containers for vinegar, rose-water and a variety of syrups, as well as perfumes. In the past ten years a number of talented designers have revived the traditional glass industry and developed a variety of designs which are suitable for today's various applications.There are water jugs, decanters, mugs, glasses in different shapes and sizes for liquids...

Calculations based upon the cense reviles the operational potential of glass industry in Iran . In 2005 the nominal production capacity of flat glass estimated 960,000 tons annually and operational capacity estimated 750,000 tons annually. In 2007 the nominal production capacity estimated as 1,250,000 tons annually, and operational production capacity estimated as 1 million tons annually.
The nominal production of glassware in 2005 accounted for 365,500 tons and the operational production accounted for more than 334,000 tons. The nominal production estimated 400,000 tons annually, and the operational production estimated 380,000 tons annually (analyses is based on data applied from 18 large size industrial firms and more that 100 small size industrial firms).
